Stocking up for the voyage ahead

29 August 2007

Victualling for Leg 1

Sorting out the food and stowing it on board is a mammoth task.  All the labels from the tins are removed and their contents are marked on with permanent pen to prevent any wet or lost labels causing confusion at sea and blocking up bilges.  Other food is portioned up and carefully sealed in Ziploc bags and Tupperware containers to prevent the contents from getting wet.  Some of the boats have even chosen to stow their food in day packs, making life easier for those on mother watch and ensuring a continuously rotating menu.

Finally, space on board must be found to stow these vast amounts of food.  The galley has enough room to stow food for a couple of days but the majority needs to be housed elsewhere such as lockers and bilges.  Maps of stowage locations are produced which keep the mothers happy and help prevent the boat from being turned upside down in the hunt for a particular item.
