Setting a precedent for Clipper 09-10

With a total of six podium positions (four firsts and two seconds) from 14 individual races and an overall race position of second place, the crew of Hull & Humber were praised for their achievements at a special celebration event at Hull’s Guildhall last Wednesday.

Invited by the Lord Mayor of Kingston-upon-Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Councillor Elaine Garland, the Hull & Humber crew and skipper Danny Watson were reunited for the first time since the race finish on 5 July.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the skipper, Danny, and all the crew for their total commitment, dedication and determination. They are indeed wonderful ambassadors for the city. I am proud and privileged to be part of one big, happy Clipper family.”

Joining Elaine in her praise of the crew’s achievements was Clipper Race founder Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who said, “You did yourselves so proud…you were a great credit to your boat, a great credit to your sponsor. I hope you will be able to turn round and say in the future That was the turning point in my life.’”

The Clipper Race is a unique event, turning complete sailing novices into seasoned ocean racers and enabling them to achieve the pinnacle of ocean racing, a circumnavigation. Regardless of previous sailing experience, the race unites people from all walks of life, everyday people who are willing to put their normal lives on hold and take on the challenge of a lifetime.

Hull & Humber’s success in Clipper 07-08 has set a precedent for her crew in the next edition of the race. Expectations will be high when the home favourite sets sail from the Humber on 13 September next year and she’ll need an exceptional crew to improve on her second place and bring home the prestigious Clipper Trophy. Crew recruitment manager, David Cusworth, will be in Leeds from 17 to 20 November on the hunt for crew from Yorkshire and North East Lincolnshire who are up to the challenge of sailing Hull & Humber to victory.
