One Hull of a weekend for the Clipper 07-08 fleet

On Friday evening at a special prize-giving event in Humber Quays next to the Humber River the winning Hull & Humber crew were presented with the Wilberforce Challenge Cup. The trophy was specially designed by Wedgwood. All the crews and skippers of the Clipper fleet were welcomed to Hull by Terry Hodgkinson the Chairman of Yorkshire Forward which is the Regional Development Agency behind the sponsorship of Hull & Humber. Clipper Chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, also attended the ceremony and congratulated the crew on handling the severe weather conditions on their race to Hull. He also passed on words of wisdom and advice on the challenges they would face on the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race.
Saturday morning saw the continuation of the Wilberforce events with the entire crew of Hull & Humber being invited to the Wilberforce Institute of Slavery and Emancipation (WISE) in Hull. They joined the Lord Mayor of Hull, Brenda Petch, who was invited to sign the ONE HULL Wilberforce petition to highlight modern day slavery. The petition will be taken around the world by the ONE HULL Tag Team, a specially-selected group of young people in a community project run by Hull’s Local Strategic Partnership.
At the end of the signing ceremony the Wilberforce Challenge Cup was entrusted to the Director of WISE, Professor David Richardson, where it will be placed on display at the Institute.
The signing ceremonies continued on Sunday with the Chairman of ONE HULL, Kath Lavry and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston signing the ONE HULL Wilberforce petition in a ceremony at Humber Quays. The skipper of Hull & Humber Danny Watson also signed it before formally handing it over to the ONE HULL Tag Team.
The ONE HULL Tag Team will sail out of Hull this evening on board Hull & Humber with the rest of the Clipper fleet as they continue with their training prior to the race start in Liverpool on 16 September.
